Electronic Resources Troubleshooting

This guide includes fixes for common issues when attempting to use Butler Libraries online resources.

Common Database Issues

While most issues can be resolved with the general information in the Connecting to an E-Resource page, there are some specific solutions for certain issues.

New York Times

The New York Times username and password you created will expire after 2 years for students or 4 years for faculty and staff.  When you signed up for an account, it should have shown you your expiration date. NYT does not currently have a way to see the expiration date after the initial account sign up.

To Renew Your New York Times Account:

From the Library Web Page

If your username and password expire, you will not be able to access articles even if you are logged in with your Butler email. When this happens:

  1. Go to the link found on the A-Z list or the Articles and Databases page for New York Times.
  2. Login to the Butler page with your MyButler username and password (without the @butlercc.edu).
  3. Click Create account. You should then be prompted to choose what type of user you are (student, faculty/staff, other) before you see the renewal screen.

From AccessNYT

If the process above does not work for you, you can renew your account by going to http://accessnyt.com/

  1. Type in and select "Butler Community College, El Dorado, KS".
  2. Scroll down and select "Go".
  3. Log in with your MyButlerCC login information (without the @butlercc.edu).
  4. Click "Create Account" and use your Butler email and a password of your choosing to set up your account.

If that still doesn't resolve your access, please contact the library at lwnixon@butlercc.edu.

Resetting Your NYT Password

If you cannot remember your password and you know your account is not yet expired, you can reset your account's password through NYT by selecting "Reset Password". An email with a reset link will be sent to your Butler email. If you are not receiving the password reset emails, it may be going to your email's Quarantine. You will need to release the email from Quarantine in order to receive the link.

You can find the Quarantine page by opening one of your emails from quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com and clicking "Quarantine page" or by visiting https://security.microsoft.com/quarantine. You will need to login to your Butler email and select the email from NYT, then click "Release".

If you cannot access the emails in your Quarantine in a timely manner, you will need to add NYT to your email Whitelist which allows the emails to go to your regular inbox instead of the Quarantine. For steps on how to add an email to the Whitelist, follow the steps in the handout below.

UpToDate

A common issue with UpToDate is a consistent pop-up window that wants the user to accept the terms of use.  This does not happen for everyone and it does not seem to be an issue on the mobile app.

If you are getting this continual pop-up, do the following:

  1. Clear your cache and cookies for all time.
  2. Click the link to UpToDate on the A-Z list (https://butlercc.libguides.com/az.php?a=u) and login using your Butler username and password.  This is the access information you use to access Canvas.
  3. Once logged in, click on your name in the upper-right and then select, My Account. and then Register.  Once you receive a confirmation email (must be your Butler email), you are ready to use UpToDate.
  4. Login at http://www.uptodate.com/login.  This is the URL you will use from now on to login and NOT get the pop-up.

CloudLibrary

To login to CloudLibrary, you will use your Butler ID and the password you created in the Butler Libraries Online Catalog.  The default password is USERPASS, if you have not changed it.

You can change your password by going to the online catalog and clicking on the "Please Login" link in the upper right corner.  Once you click on this, you will be brought to the login pop-up.  Click on the "Forgot Your Password" and follow the prompts, you will need your Butler ID number.  It may take a minute or so to reset but you should then be able to use the new password for the online catalog and CloudLibrary.
