Swank Digital Campus provides streaming access to feature films. These films may only be viewed through the Swank Digital Campus platform. Films may be shown in class or linked in Canvas for online student use. The films do not have public performance rights and are for classroom use only.
1. What is the difference between Swank and Films on Demand?
Both services provide movies, shows, and films for classroom use, but Films on Demand is aimed at providing academic content (documentaries, news casts, etc.) while Swank provides access to films, shows, and documentaries whose original purpose was not for education (classic films, current blockbusters, and everything in between).
2. How do I get access to movie titles that aren't on the list of currently licensed films?
Instructors can place requests for films through Swank. Instructors will need to make an account using their Butler emails, select the desired title, and click "Request". See the Swank Quick Guide above for more instructions. If you are having trouble creating an account, please email a librarian the title of the film you are interested in and we can submit the request for you!
3. What titles are available on Swank?
Swank has thousands of titles to choose from. You can access the full Swank catalog after logging into your Swank account. See the Swank Quick Guide for more information.
4. Is closed captioning available?
Yes, closed captioning is available for most films. You can check which are available for your title by clicking on the "Captions" section after selecting your corresponding title.
5. Can I use one of the Licensed films in the Digital Campus portal if I did not request it?
Yes, faculty can use any film from the Licensed section in their classes.
6. How long are the films available to view in the Digital Campus portal?
Films are available for one year from the date they are added to our licensed titles and may be relicensed for additional years if needed. Let your librarian know if you would like to use your film for more than the one year license allows.
7. How do students access the films?
You can add a direct link to the film into your Canvas page (available after the film has been licensed) or direct students to Swank from the Database list.
8. Will students need any special software to view the film?
No. If a link is not working, check that your AdBlockers are disabled and try the link again. If you are still experiencing issues, contact the Library for help.
9. Can I watch films on my mobile device?
Yes, Swank supports mobile streaming. If you are on iPhone and cannot play a video, check to make sure your iOS is updated to the most current version. If you update and it still does not play, contact the Library for help.
10. Can I use a Swank film in a campus wide screening?
No. Films may be shown in classes or linked in Canvas for enrolled students to view outside of class. The films do not have public performance rights.
